The Man Who Sued God:

Starring Billy Connolly, Judy Davis, Colin Friels, John Howard and Wendy Hughes. Rated M: Opens at Hoyts October 25:

It was my absolute pleasure to catch this movie on only its second ever showing. The cast and crew got their first look in Sydney just three days before I got to see it at Parliament House in Canberra with the producer and director both on hand to introduce it.

The Man Who Sued God casts Billy Connolly in his first truly starring comedic movie role.

And boy, is it ever funny.

Steve Myers (Connolly) is a recovering lawyer turned fisherman whose boat gets hit by lightning and sinks.

When the insurance company refuses to pay his claim on the grounds that it was an act of God, Steve regresses to the legal fraternity and lodges suit against the man himself.

What follows is an hilarious romp through the courts as Steve puts the head of every major church in the dock — and on the spot, because the only way they can defend against the suit is to prove that God doesn’t exist.

What starts out as one man’s fight against a corporate giant, however, soon turns into a class action worth more than half a billion dollars. So despite being offered a very generous settlement Steve is forced to ask for the payout in dollar coins "So I can shove each one of them up..."

The Man Who Sued God is destined to rank with the best Aussie comic movies on the world stage. It is a typical Aussie flick (in the best sense of the term), full of quintessential local humour delivered with perfect larrikin brilliance by an acclaimed and accomplished actor supported by a terrific local cast.
