BLUE STREAK:
Martin Lawrence, Luke Wilson, Dave Chappelle and William
Forsythe. Rated M.
Martin Lawrence returns to the wise-cracking bad-and-black cop
mold we found him in a couple of years ago in Bad Boys. But this time he's not really a
cop at all.
He's the talented master jewel thief, Miles Logan. During an
audacious jewel heist, one of his partners turns bad and wants the $20 million diamond all
to himself. He kills one partner and then tries to kill Logan, who is actually in
possession of the huge stone. During the ensuing chase through the upper floors of a
couple of skyscrapers, one of which is still a building site, Logan is forced to hide the
precious diamond in an air vent.
After being caught by the police and spending the next two years
in jail, Logan gets out. The first thing he does is visit his girlfriend whom he hasn't
see for the two years. He thought she didn't want to see her man all locked up like that.
The real reason for her lack of interest was that he had apparently told her he was a
banker. "No baby, I said a bank robber. I had a stutter but I'm working on the whole
speech impediment thing baby."
Anyway with loving out of the question, the next thing to do is
go back to the building sight and retrieve his nest egg.
LAPD!!! Aw, hell, man!!! They've built a damn police station on
my diamond.
When pizza delivery doesn't secure entry to the building,
there's only one thing left to do. Uncle whooptydoop is a clever forger, he can get me in.
So, armed with a fake badge, forged security pass and forged pers docs claiming 16 unit
citations and two mayoral commendations, he waltzes straight into a new job and, as it
turns out, into a new career.
Unable to get the time away from his new partner to go crawling
through the ventilation system, he ends up on the street solving crime in no time flat. He
is, after all, a master criminal.
With a couple of seriously big busts under his belt he gets
promoted to lead detective in the burglary squad, all the while trying to slip the
confines of his partner to get the damn stone.
Blue Streak is an action-packed laugharama in the Beverly Hills
Cop mould. For my money, Lawrence is a much more likable wise ass than Eddy Murphy, and
the premise for the plot makes for some interesting gags and situation comedy. It's built
to a very familiar formula (very close in more ways than one to the aforementioned Beverly
Hills Cop) but is fresh enough in its delivery to be thoroughly enjoyable.
